Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Character: Donatello

Hey everyone! This post is all about Donatello.  He's probably my second favorite turtle, since he's a major nerd, and he gets easily distracted by nerdy things.

Donatello
Donatello (Don or Donnie) is the second-youngest turtle. He wears a purple bandanna and fights with a bo-staff. He is probably the one who has remained the most constant throughout the different series as far as his character goes.

This Don is the technological nerd. He's all about building things and crazy contraptions, which tend to malfunction. Don wants to be recognized for his building genius, and in some episodes tries to gain fame and fortune, which doesn't work. Mostly, he's content to build things to help his brothers.

This Don is initially incredibly distrustful of humans, or anyone not in his family. April helps to change his mindset, but he does have a suspicion of humans.

TMNT 2003
This Don got a bit of a reboot and more personality. He went from being a technological nerd to a full-blown genius. In this series, Don often saves the day with a new invention of his that often surpasses modern human technology. He is always fascinated by technology and science and often gets distracted by it, usually during tense moments, which annoys his brothers.

Don has a surprisingly mild personality. He's incredibly calm and rarely gets angry at his brothers. He's shown to be a pacifist, being more willing to study something rather than fighting it.

However, this doesn't diminish his fighting abilities; Don is formidable with his bo-staff. Because of his calm demeanor, Don is usually the one that will come between Raph and Leo and calm them down. I see him as the stable rock in the family, the one who can help keep everyone together, despite tension being high at times.

This idea of Don being the stable rock in the family is illustrated in the episode "Same as it Never Was," in which Don is blasted into a dimension in the future of the turtles without Don. The results are that the other three turtles have split apart and Shredder has taken over the world. It really showcases that Don was needed to complete the team and to keep the family together. Without him, the fights between Leo and Raph escalated and tore the family apart. I think this episode was created to show the unusual bond that Don has with each of his brothers and that while his personality is mild, and he sometimes can be overlooked, he is essential to the team.

Don shows to be rather close with Mikey, despite their differences. This is probably due to their similar non-aggressive personalities. They both prefer to avoid confrontation, so the two often stick together, particularly when Leo and Raph are fighting again.

Don is the turtle that gets along with everyone. He knows how to calm Raph down, is patient with Mikey, and is willing to listen to Leo. He's essentially the peacemaker within the family, always willing to put an end to arguments and fights. He does get angry occasionally, but it doesn't happen very often.

Don is probably the most emotionally sound of all the turtles and shows this throughout the series, although he probably should've been more messed up from his trip to that hellish alternate future and  from his encounter with the Triceratons. Unfortunately, he doesn't get as much development in this show as the others do, and his mild personality tends to make him a little overlooked.

Like 2003 Don, this Don is a technological genius and is always spouting jargon that his brothers don't ever understand. He seems to be even more distracted by technology in this series and is fascinated with the Kraang, particularly its mutagen properties. He's considered "odd" by his brothers, but they respect his genius and enjoy the gadgets he comes up with.

Like 2003 Don, this Don is more interested in studying his enemy than fighting it, but he is still incredibly strong. The biggest change to Don in this series is that he's not as calm as 2003 Don. He's a bit more hi-strung and more likely to react to his brothers' antics. He has less patience and will often yell at his brothers to go away and let him think. He is also more sarcastic than his previous incarnations, often making wry remarks to his brothers in tense situations. He's definitely showing more development than the previous Dons.

Don shows to have a lot of compassion in this show. He was the first to want to help April and her dad as they were getting taken by the Kraang. Don is shown to be a bit more sensitive to the emotions of others and is more willing to help out. He also demonstrates capabilities of leading. An example of this is when Raph is leading the team and freezes up during a tense situation. Don manages to take control of the situation and get his brothers out of danger. This shows that Don has the potential to be a leader, but he doesn't seem to want it, preferring to spend time in his laboratory.

In this show, Don has an obvious crush on April, and tends to act really awkward around her. In this case, he is a classic awkward teenager being goofy around the girl he likes. He's actually quite adorable in his own dorky way, and even though you may grimace at his embarrassing attempts to get April to like him, you can't help but love him and sympathize with his situation.

This Don is the tallest out of his brothers and has more of a lanky figure. He has reddish-brown eyes and a gap between his front teeth (something which bugged me in the beginning but that I've grown to like). His skin has a more olive tone, similar to 2003 Don.

Like I said earlier, Don overall is pretty stable as far as his personality and character role goes. In each series, he's the techno genius and as a result, isn't as aggressive as his brothers. I like that the newest series is giving his character more depth and personality since that was one of my issues with the 2003 version of Don. In all honesty, he's probably my favorite character in the 2012 version of TMNT.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about Don, our turtle in purple. Until later, folks!
